MILITARY EXPERT FOR CAPTION COPY EDITING TEAM

Military expert with strong editing and proofreading skills to join a team of five copy editing imagery captions and other metadata of imagery received by the Defense Imagery Management Operations Center (DIMOC) at the Pentagon. Mission is to clarify, confirm, and/or obtain information missing from submitted imagery captions. Conduct research using Government approved sources to ensure that caption information is as correct as possible. Reorganize and/or rewrite sentences to achieve clarity, coherence and logical flow. Verify the identification of military hardware depicted in the imagery being processed with the information provided in the caption data.
Clarify, confirm, and/or obtain information missing from submitted imagery metadata, to include creating metadata for imagery that arrives without it, ensuring metadata is as complete and correct as possible.
Create primary keywords for submitted imagery in accordance with operating procedures.
We are looking for someone with a broad military background and excellent writing and leadership skills. A bachelor's degree in English or Communications or at least 4 years of experience in copy editing is required. Must understand the principles for developing and improving written information to be disseminated to and understood by a wide and varied audience. This knowledge is gained through (i) specialized training in copy editing documents, (ii) experience developing and writing as an author, and (iii) experience rewriting and editing documents and discussing them with the authors.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to achieve a clear statement of imagery context, and able to detect and correct errors in English usage, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar and syntax.
Ability to tactfully present information in a clear, articulate manner to agency technical staff and private contractors.
Ability to use personal computers employing a variety of software packages to electronically copyedit still and video imagery captioning and other metadata, including, but not limited to, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox.
Knowledge of the organizations, functions, and military hardware (weapons systems, equipment, etc.) of the Department of Defense is desired.
Ability to analyze written materials and detect errors in fact and/or missing but requisite information, as well as, to conduct research to correct or validate information and/or determine missing information.
Ability to apply the Associated Press Stylebook and the DoD Captioning Style Guide to imagery captions and metadata.
Experience in photo editing or photojournalism (including evaluation of quality of imagery and choosing appropriate imagery for publishing) is desired.
